What is Spilltex®

Spilltex® is a new and unique filter media with a multitude of potential applications
This eco-friendly filtration solution effectively removes from water a wide range of liquid hydrophobic oils:
  • crude oil,
  • petroleum-based oils,
  • vegetable oils,
  • essential and silicone oils.
It is a cotton textile membrane modified by our unique formula of polysaccharide microgels. Biopolax’s state-of-the-art process recycles various agricultural waste to produce nanoscale organic biopolymer reverse-soluble particles – biomicrogels – with unique properties.

The membrane is modified with two polymers: polydopamine (PDA), a product of dopamine (DA) polymerization under alkali conditions, and chitosan (CS), which are introduced by the dip-coating method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and the underwater oil contact angle measurements demonstrated that the adsorption of polymers on the surface of textiles can create a surface roughness that helps to increase the oleophobic properties of the membrane.

Why Spilltex®

Key features and properties of Spilltex®

Separates various oil-water mixtures with an efficiency of up to 99.9% (including petroleum/water, crude oil/water, vegetable oil/water, and toluene/water)
Has a high water flux permeability: the flux of water through Spilltex® is 15,000-30,000 L/(m2h), that is more than 4 times higher than that for similar textile membranes. Has a wide operating range: initial concentration of hydrocarbon in water is 10-5000 mg/l, temperatures: 0 to +85°C, pH: 2-8
Eco-friendly and 100% biodegradable
Can be supplied in different sizes, shapes and forms, as well as reinforced for special needs
Easily regenerated by washing in water which allows it to be used repeatedly
Allows water to pass through while retaining hydrocarbon – holds up to 10 cm of oil on the surface
Not wetted by oil. Petroleum products and oils do not stick and can be easily removed from the fabric surface
Helps achieve a residual oil in water level – up to 5 mg/L

To activate Spilltex® membrane put it in water within 5-15 min. This activation is necessary for the formation of a gel that increases hydrophilic properties of the membrane.
